Young Artists of WA
Interview series for Propel Youth Arts WA

During my time working for Propel Youth Arts WA in 2019 to
2021, I had the privilege of interviewing and having conversations with young
artists in Western Australia.
Each interview and conversation spotlighted the individual and their creative
practice within the context of being a young person in WA.
We chatted about their introduction to the arts, current projects and future
goals. These young people also shared their underlying thoughts, influences,
and hopes and efforts of progressive change within the local arts industry and
how they and their work are situated within the broader scope of our society.
From Asian representation to Indigenous identity to the lack of Black
representation in media to the importance of mental wellbeing and care, each
interview offers a genuine voice and perspective of being a young person
connected to art.
Propel Youth Arts WA was the peak body for youth arts in WA working in
collaboration with artists, organisations and communities to ensure that young
people are equipped to inspire arts and culture.
After more than twenty years of festivals, mentorship and supporting countless
people through key programs and projects, Propel closed its doors at the end of
June 2025 due to a lack of core operational funding from the WA Government. Closure
by disinvestment and the deteriorating focus on arts and culture in WA is worryingly
and increasingly becoming more common.
Creative and engaged young people are vital to the fabric of
any community and place. The below interviewees are only a small handful of the
incredible young people in WA who were kind enough to give me their time and words.

Deceptive Simplicity
The View From Here by The Art Gallery of Western Australia

This article was first published in the print publication The View From Here in October 2021,&#38;nbsp;a limited edition newspaper featuring original writing about and photography of thirty featured artists and projects that comprise The Art Gallery of Western Australia’s exhibition of the same name.
Deceptive Simplicity looks at two interior oil paintings by Holly Yoshida, Five and a Half Minute Hallway: Exploration 6 (2019) and Offerings (2021). Through technical finesse and selective depiction, Yoshida’s curious paintings of domestic interiors are deceptively simple portals into the viewer’s psyche. Also on AGWA’s website ︎︎︎

Holly Yoshida’s curious paintings are deceptively simple portals into the viewer’s psyche. Her still life interiors depict eerily empty rooms devoid of personal artefacts or human existence; they give no sense of to whom these spaces belong. Instead, Yoshida’s precise use of depth and clever point of view invites the viewer to project themself on to—or even insert themself into—her paintings.

Two works displayed in The View From Here exhibition, both drawn from the State Art Collection, are no exception to this. They both reference contemporary subjects—typical Perth homes—but are painted using Yoshida’s signature reversal of a traditional grisaille technique. (Instead of working from greyscale in the underpainting and adding colour, Yoshida starts with colour and paints monochromatically over the top.) Yoshida’s early-career decision to specialise in oil painting was part eagerness to master the traditional medium and part act of compassion, care and devotion to her subjects; feelings attended to through mixing the infinite possibilities of oil paint. It’s a process that brings out the complexity in perceivably mundane scenes.

Five and a Half Minute Hallway: Exploration 6 (2019) is a painting that both reveals and hides parts of a typical Perth rental home. The scene lacks a human subject, and even contains a vacant picture frame on the wall; the space is an empty vessel that draws in the viewer as the occupant. Yoshida says in doing so, the space takes on a private intimacy.

“Being sad within empty rooms is pretty normal because it’s an empty space to be filled, so whatever you have inside of you is what it gets filled with,” she says. “You’ve become situated in the scene and think: ‘What am I going to do now? Where does this lead me?’.”

The viewer is confronted with a sense of emptiness and erasure but they need not feel alone. They are with themself, their own thoughts and histories.
Similarly, in Offerings (2021), Yoshida focuses on mundanity and selectively erases personal belongings. She focused on portraying “ghosts and invisible presences, where walls, which are porous in nature, inhale the memories and feelings of the people that inhabit them”. A delicate patch of blue light pulls the viewer into a space that is simultaneously supernatural and secular.

Offerings references a home that was once a site of intimacy for Yoshida, and was built from offering a small part of herself to the work and exhaling what the walls had absorbed over time.

Spaces hold memory and energy, and that is also true of Yoshida’s work. Depending on the occupant, spaces are also in constant flux; like Yoshida herself. Her painterly precision and fervor for learning and developing her work mean there can be no fixed idea of who Yoshida is as a painter, just as there is no fixed interpretation of her paintings.

Recollections
Journal by Centre For Stories

Journal is an online column by Centre For Stories that showcases writing by local, national and international writers. It includes stories of creative non-fiction about real personal experiences and served as a immediate response to the pandemic’s effect on writers.&#38;nbsp;
Recollections is a creative non-fiction piece that delves into race and identity centred around three memories that I recollected during the height of the pandemic and spurred by coversations of the Black Lives Matter movement happening around the world in 2020.
The three memories occured many years ago during primary and secondary school, a casual remark from a friend, waiting for my name during roll call and painting my self-portrait in art class.

More often than not, memories can be brought forth triggered by something as small as a gesture. The older the memory, the more speckled it is. In my experience, I can bring forth the memories of places, its events and its feelings too rapidly and too precisely, too vividly as though harshly transported back. These past few months have produced meaningful conversations around race and identity. With these topics at the back of my head, dark late nights in silence before sleep and sunny in-depth family conversations have spurred recollections of long forgotten events.

I remembered it was towards the end of the semester in year 7 and I was with a group of friends after 3:15pm waiting to be picked up. The weather was tepid, unusually cloudy with our shadows marking the bitumen under our sneakers, I remembered the white netball markings on the court. I remembered the feeling of being affected by something that had happened and that I was seeking empathy and an ear that would listen to me. What I couldn’t remember was precisely what was affecting me, how the conversation started or what I said to my friends.

In a positive and consoling tone my friend said with a gentle grin, “But, I don’t see you as Asian though!”

There was no malice or ill feeling, it was her frank with no harm intended. She was trying to console me but I was confused. I didn’t understand what she meant. I didn’t know what to say or what I was supposed to process. A silver car coming to a stop called the end of our conversation. I said bye and went home.

I remembered one particular day, our teacher was absent. Instead, we had a middle aged white Australian man as our substitute, I think he was actually a P.E teacher. He was blocky with a deep laugh and an impatient looking frown. Truancy was a big issue at my school, so taking roll call was stressed and always occurred at the beginning of class.

We took our seats and quietened down, the substitute teacher’s meaty hands held a neon lime green clipboard that had our names listed out alphabetically by our family name. We all knew who was who in class and where we stood in line on the class roster, I knew my name came after Joshua King. The class waited impatiently, wanting to get roll call out of the way, wanting class to end so that we could leave the coolly humid classroom and break for recess and fresh air.

Joshua King’s name was called out and he replied he was present in a bored tone. My name was up next. I waited in anticipation, a silly nervousness running through me whenever it came to public displays of anything that involved myself. I waited, ready to answer that I was in class.

There was an audible pause. Shortly after, the substitute teacher chuckled and said, “I’m not even gonna try pronouncing this one.”

The memory cuts there.

I remembered my self-portrait back in high school art class. The assignment was simple, an A5 acrylic painting of ourselves from the shoulders up. It was the first assignment we had that focused on painting humans. Prior to this, we focused on abstract still lifes and imitating famous art styles. The whole class started off sketching and transferring their preliminary markings onto a scrawny canvas, and, a few classes later it was time to paint.

That day, it was in the middle of winter and the bright sun beamed down into the art room, the smell of paints and transparent solvents permeated the air. We all adored our art teacher, she was kind and understanding, and always wore patchy eclectic clothes.

“Listen up guys, everyone write this down…” she said in her loud voice.

She told us the formula for skin coloured paint. The majority of the recipe called for a good amount of Titanium White, a dollop of yellow, a spike of red and a whisper of blue. The blue was the last colour added and it completely transformed the paint. I remembered being intrigued and astonished that such a miniscule amount of blue could change the paint so quickly when mixed together. I felt like I was learning something tangible at school.

I painted my portrait. It didn’t look like me. Closer to the assignment’s deadline, I realised that the colour of the paint I was using for my skin wasn’t quite right. The more I worked on my self-portrait, the more unrecognisable I became.

Isn’t it strange that you don’t always realise how you’re feeling or how you’re affected in the moment when something happens? Although seemingly small and born out of ignorance and innocence, these incidents at their time and circumstance made me falter and doubt who I was. Unbeknownst to my teen self, it was disconnection and isolation I felt. I remembered these sentences that came out of the mouths of teachers and school friends, it made me doubt my own identity. These sentences stressed that for some reason I needed to validate my Asian-ness, validate what I looked like, who I was.

Recollecting these memories and processing them reaffirmed that regardless of how oblivious you are to it, society works in ways that are at times hurtful. What they teach you at school is not absolute, and seemingly ordinary comments and perceptions can be baseless, ignorant and inadvertently hurtful. Although I wish it would come quicker at certain times, realisation is an exceptional thing. It helps to process some sense of what has happened. Recollecting and processing these events have reiterated that I am the only one who can say I am this or that, it has reminded me that I love my name and those that can’t be bothered to learn it, don’t deserve to say it.</description>

	WEDNESDAY 2 APRIL 2025

Kanazawa - tracking notes, what to eat and places to see

Three nights in Kanazawa allowed enough time to walk around the city, visit must see spots and eat plentiful and local delicacies. I would go back again to Kanazawa, with its rounded focus on architecture, art and craft, and food, there’s a lot to see.

I went to Kanazawa in February 2024, a month after the devastating earthquake off the Noto Peninsula. Although, Kanazawa did not suffer as badly as some other areas, there was noticeable damage to structures and a few sights and museums were shut for closer safety inspections. The community itself, first and foremost was largely impacted, there was an urge for expecting visitors to not cancel their plans. The general gist was to continue as planned, to endure, rebuild and move on stronger, together.

When in Kanazawa, look out for beautiful architecture, local art and handicraft here and there in unassuming places, revel in crab dishes especially when visiting in winter, visit one or two cafes, try ofu (wheat gluten), and make sure to stop by a sweets place to eat fruit daifuku.
Tracking notes in Kanazawa:

Thursday, 1 February
Flight: Tokyo Haneda to Komatsu Airport (1 hour) -&#38;gt; Bus to Kanazawa Station
Kanazawa is an extremely walkable city, there are several different bus passes you can purchase but we chose to walk.Kanazawa Station: the architecture is beautiful.
Pouring rain when we arrived.
Pizza for lunch near the station, Pizzeria e Trattoria Da Take. Margarita, quattro fromaggi and prosciutto.
Oden for dinner at Miyuki. The best daikon of my life, chunky, juicy, firm but tender, cooked in a clear, savoury oden broth, honestly the best oden I’ve ever had. The only qualm I had was that we didn’t make a booking but the owner squeezed us in for a quick dinner, so we had to scoff everything down.

We’re at the end of 2024 and books were read, 32 to be exact surpassing my goal of 30 books this year. Every time I read a book, especially a good one that hits me in the core, I am reminded of how much I love reading. What a joy reading and books are, how, even when the book is bad, I can still appreciate the feelings and reactions it brings forth, whether it’s awe of something beautifully written or a scoff in disgust of something that just really didn’t hit the mark.

This year, there were certainly a few duds here and there, enjoyable page-turners, and a rare few that have made space to sit and stay.

This year saw a continuation of “romantasy” books spurred on by a few reads in&#38;nbsp;2023’s book list. I continued Sarah J. Maas’ ACOTAR series with reluctance on the recommendation of friends. I thought the first book was poorly written, but the second, A Court of Mist and Fury, completely threw me off in a good way. The quality contrast between the second and first was so great that I had trouble believing that the two books were written by the same author. I ended up reading the third book as well, which was enjoyable but disappointedly mediocre

–

making me think, I’ll just stop the series there.
I read the entire Flesh and Fire series by Jennifer L. Armentrout which consisted of four lengthy books. It was definitely a page-turner and I was hooked with the first book’s world-building and witty banter and tension between the two love interests. It went downhill though. By the third and fourth book, things were just going around and around in circles with needless repetition. It really should’ve been edited, chopped and condensed to three books.

&#60;img width="231" height="247" width_o="231" height_o="247" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1c60d7fa8d137f59dd2fae30b5830f7dfe78434518ddce4a96e00de105d109f9/yoko-ogawa-minas-matchbox-translated-literature-japanese-yoshika-kon.png" data-mid="223347673" border="0" data-no-zoom="true" alt="Mina's Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa." data-caption="Mina's Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa." src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/231/i/1c60d7fa8d137f59dd2fae30b5830f7dfe78434518ddce4a96e00de105d109f9/yoko-ogawa-minas-matchbox-translated-literature-japanese-yoshika-kon.png" /&#62;

The standout this year was&#38;nbsp;Yōko Ogawa’s Mina’s Matchbox.&#38;nbsp;The book was a packaged, perfect novel where not much really happens. The main character, Tomoko’s nostalgic reflections and poignant relay of her year spent with her eccentric extended family was healing and soothing in exploring friendship and family secrets. I loved this book, its gentleness and touch of melancholy combined with peculiar and wonderful characters was a real treat. I particularly adored Pochiko, the pet pygmy hippo. 2024 was really a year about pygmy hippos.
Another memorable book was Butter by Asako Yuzuki with its beautiful and eye catching cover, the book invoked a desperate desire to eat slices of Échiré butter on its own first, then have it with freshly cooked rice and soy sauce.

A recurring author in my 2024 list was Banana Yoshimoto, one of my favourites. Moshi Moshi was a highlight with Yoshimoto’s hallmark poignant and reflective, life-affirming coming-of-age story. Whenever I see one of Yoshimoto’s books at the bookstore, it’s always an instant purchase to add to my collection.
I had a couple of duds in this year’s book list too. The book that first comes to mind was Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors, which I absolutely couldn’t stand, although I did force myself to finish it so I can only blame myself. It just wasn’t for me as I have now found out, I detest trauma-porn books.
&#60;img width="209" height="261" width_o="209" height_o="261" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bfc2cae919c6b72ea44650b739c9ebab45ea3bbc241aed1821268e4a2f23f45c/david-karashima-who-were-reading-when-were-reading-murakami-yoshika-kon.png" data-mid="223564859" border="0" alt="Who We're Reading When We're Reading Murakami by David Karashima." data-caption="Who We're Reading When We're Reading Murakami by David Karashima." src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/209/i/bfc2cae919c6b72ea44650b739c9ebab45ea3bbc241aed1821268e4a2f23f45c/david-karashima-who-were-reading-when-were-reading-murakami-yoshika-kon.png" /&#62;

Since reading a lot more translated texts in the past couple of years, I’ve been thinking more about the intricacies of translations and publishing translated literature. One evening, I suddenly remembered I had&#38;nbsp;Who We’re Reading When We’re Reading Murakami by David Karashima sitting in my bookshelf. The book essentially goes through some of the processes of translating, editing and publishing Murakami’s works. Karashima shares interviews with publishers, editors, translators and Murakami himself, revealing the deliberate choices made during packaging and exporting Japanese works to the West. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and it was fascinating to get a look into the behind-the-scene processes and conversations of translating books I’ve read myself. I rarely read non-fiction books but I definitely want to try and read more next year.

&#60;img width="154" height="213" width_o="154" height_o="213" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/aa8edd016fcfbee8d8b888c3022414026f778c5c834cca157e42a6f96c7b56d5/greek-lesson-han-kang-translated-literature-korean-yoshika-kon.png" data-mid="223348701" border="0" alt="Greek Lessons by Han Kang." data-caption="Greek Lessons by Han Kang." src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/154/i/aa8edd016fcfbee8d8b888c3022414026f778c5c834cca157e42a6f96c7b56d5/greek-lesson-han-kang-translated-literature-korean-yoshika-kon.png" /&#62;

A few additional notable books this year included,&#38;nbsp;The Secret History by Donna Tartt, which was an engaging modern-day Greek tragedy, Han Kang’s The Vegetarian and Greek Lessons which heavily twists and squeezes your mind, and&#38;nbsp;Our Share of Night by&#38;nbsp;Mariana Enríquez, which was a dark and emotional envelopment and introduction to horror and literature from Argentina.
Next year, I’ll read 40 books.

	WEDNESDAY 2 OCTOBER 2024

Hydra Island

Hydra was the last island stop on our 2022 Greece trip.
Quaint, car-free and peaceful, I will always remember the island for its beautiful scenery, especially the sea and the sky during sunset from the balcony of our villa, and also, for the fact that we came down with COVID-19.
Despite getting sick at the end of our trip, the days prior was spend reading, cooking meals in the villa and looking out at the town, water and sky.
With no cars on the island, there were donkeys here and there used mostly for transporting things. They helped us with bringing our luggage up to the villa we stayed at, I was very impressed by how lithe and agile they were climbing the steep cobblestones.
It would’ve been nice to explore more of the island but seeing as we got sick we spent the remaining days of our trip indoors.

Walking Around Athens

I think one of the defining moments of my 2022 Greece trip
was visiting the Acropolis and its Museum, and seeing the Parthenon.
The Acropolis Museum was one of the most beautiful and impressive museums I’ve
ever been to. The building itself and the displays were beautiful but just
viewing archaeological findings from the Acropolis was just unbelievable.
We did a walking guided tour of the Museum and the Acropolis with Dorina, she
was so knowledgeable and friendly which made a huge difference in our
experience. Dorina told us in depth about the history of the Acropolis and
Athens, and we also got to hear about Ancient Greek myths and figures. I’ve
always been a big fan of Ancient Greek mythology, so it was so interesting to
hear about it incorporated with archaeological findings. There was so much to
learn!
There was a section in the Museum (the Archaic Acropolis Gallery) where you
aren’t allowed to take any photos but I don’t think photos would have given it
any justice. That particular morning, I remember the sun brightly shining into
a wide room with high-ceilings, grey pillars and a bounty of different
sculptural dedications made from marble covering the area. It was spacious and
airy, and the gallery was immersive in a sense that all of these statues seemed
simultaneously and ironically alive but frozen. It was truly a special
experience walking through.

	Walking around Plaka

After the Acropolis, we met up with another guide, Katerina, who took us around the Plaka district in Athens for a walking tour. Plaka is a wonderful neighbourhood just next to the Acropolis. Katerina was exuburant and funny, and she took us around the neighbourhood, taught us Greek at a taberna where we stopped by for a late lunch, shared gossip with us about the people who live in the area and brought us to her friends’ shops in the area.

	Day-trip from Athens

Whilst in Athens, we also managed to make it out to Corinth, Epidaurus and Napflio for a day-trip. Our tour guide’s name was also Katerina!
Taking us around the Archaeological Site of the Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus, Katerina showed us the Ancient Theatre, which is considered to be the best preserved ancient theatre, and demonstrated its perfectly intact acoustics. The Sanctuary is dedicated to Asclepius, the Ancient Greek God of Medicine, who carried a serpent-entwined staff which has since been adopted as a symbol of medicine and healthcare. The Sanctuary was famously known as an ideal healing place where treating ailments was holistically approached. Treatments aligned physical and mental health, and included medicine, baths, power from the Gods, the arts (hence the theatre) amongst other treatments all administered amongst beautiful and mild natural landscapes.

	Nafplio

Nafplio is a beautiful coastal town and the perfect place to walk around slowly. We had lunch at a cute taberna outdoors, visited the local bookshop, and said hi to the town’s dogs and cats.

	THURSDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 2024

	Santorini in November

I still think about this Greece trip back in November 2022 a lot.The first stop was Santorini, its beauty really surpassed my expectations.&#38;nbsp;Blue and white were the definitive colours of Oia, where we stayed. Staring out at the Mediterranean, I felt like I was enveloped into the blue hues of the salty sea and the clear sky!
Oia
We were there early November, which was technically winter, although you wouldn’t have guessed with the bright blue sky and the sun shining. I’ve heard it gets crazy packed and jammed during the peak of summer, so being on the island during low-season was spacious, quiet and almost desolate in some parts. The lack of busy summer crowds gave room to appreciate how truly beautiful the island was. I am still in awe thinking about the stillness and deepness of the blue Mediterranean Sea and the soft colours of the sky during sunset.

	Kamari Beach

We stopped by Kamari beach towards the end of our island tour around Santorini. It was nearing sunset, desolate and peaceful during Santorini’s low-season. Looking out at the water and the moon in the sky, this was one of my favourite moments from the trip.

	Akrotiri, Megalochori and Pyrgos Kallistis
The terrain and what you can see is vastly different depending on where you are on Santorini. While you’d normally think of the colours white and blue, there are places like Ammoudi Beach in Oia and Red Beach in Akrotiri that offer hues of volcanic red.
We hopped into a car and were taken around Santorini for a day, stopping by at Red Beach, Akrotiri Archaeological Site, Thira, Pyrgos Kallistis, Kamari Beach, and Megalochori.

	NB:

Many restaurants and shops close for the winter period.
We went to a restaurant in the middle of the island called Metaxi Mas, I still think about their arugula salad! It was chillier than I expected, especially in the evenings.
